Play: album van de week (48, 2015): The Myrrors – Arena Negra

Week 48 inmiddels en deze week The Myrrors in de aanbieding met Arena Negra.

Weer eentje in de hoek van de langdradige psych. Hou ik ook van. Reden om deze plaat ook nog eens hier te pluggen is m’n eigen verslag van Le Guess Who? dit jaar:

‘Generation Y’s psychedelic rock revival’, aldus het boekje. De band uit Tucson, Arizona is net bezig met een omzichtige opbouw en dan weet je eigenlijk dat je niet weg moet lopen. Mooie rol ook voor de viool. Super sfeervol en het bouwt fantastisch (langzaam) op tot een psychedelische wervelstorm van ongekende gelukzaligheid. Die ontbranding op het einde. Fantastisch. Was dit “The Forward Path”? Ik had echt geen flauw benul van het bestaan van deze band, de voorbereiding op dit festival was dan ook dramatisch, maar dit zijn de dingen die je dan juist weten te verrassen en tonen de klasse van het festival. Denk ik. Het album Arena Negra van dit jaar ga ik zeker vaker opzetten (eh… streamen) thuis. – verslag Le Guess Who 2015 (zaterdag)

… In pretty psych-rock fashion, this is a very unassuming record with moments of spectral ambience and squealing instrumentation to heighten its cause. It’s not the mysterious package it’s been billed as, nor does it come from “shaman”, as the appropriate press release happily exclaims. These are tight, eerie jams that mainly sparkle when the cymbals are struck and the bassline moves. If you like listening to music in the dark, you’ll like this. –  Norman Records
